Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 in Long Beach, CA. Her aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. The aunt she had was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned that art is a great instrument to engage in political activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious through her mother. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has been for generations. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the historic civil right's march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. When she was in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash in the house of a member on the jury. After being disappointed in journalism by the tasks she was handed and deciding to go after a career in publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be an intern at an unassuming studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
